August - Peter Cahusac
won the singles scratch tournament for 2009 (delayed!). Gill Robson won
the handicap singles competition and will represent the club at the
Chetwood Trophy event at Hampton Court held early September. We all
wish her luck.

28 - 29 November - Visit
from Jesmond Dene headed by Fiona Harrison. The Newcastle players
wanted to play on the world's oldest court before the penthouses
collapsed. Saturday night all went for a meal & drinks at the Stag.
2 August - Visit
from Hatfield House led by Nick Brodie. Visitors had their handicaps
increased by 20 points to allow for the Falkland quarré court
(e.g. Nick was playing off 50!). The 4 visitors were matched with 4
Falkland players for singles, and 5 doubles were also arranged between
the clubs. A close and enjoyable competition began after lunch, the
last & deciding match played at 6pm. Remarkably (or not), Falkland
emerged as the winner 5 - 4 (full
results here). Afterwards, a hearty meal & drinks at the Lomond
Country Inn at Kinnesswood overlooking Loch Leven as the sun set.
10 April - Rob
Fahey and Rod McNaughtan visited to play a one-set exhibition match,
won by Rod serving from 5 all, 40 all, match point. Neither managed to
get a ball through the lunes - a special skill restricted to Falkland
members.

19 - 26 April - A team
of eight, yes eight, members played in the T&RA Centenary Tournament in London under the
same
1539ers name. Five of us were from the
local hard-core (Bob Hammond, James Murray, Gill Robson, Ian la
Terriere and
I), joined by Maynard Hall from Cumbria, Duncan Macintosh again, from
his home
in Wales, and Bob Hammond’s son Robert from London. 45 teams took part,
from
all the tennis-playing countries, and we had the pleasure of two
matches at
Queen’s, one at Lord’s, and one at Hatfield House. All of us played our
full
quota of tennis and despite having accommodation which was scattered
far and
wide, we managed to wine and dine together as a team enough for a solid
feeling
of esprit de corps to emerge.
Inevitably however, this warm feeling failed to propel us any further
than the
round-robin stages and we were able to come home before the excitement
and
expense of London
started to wear a bit thin. Again I
think we made our presence felt with the opponents we met and at the
social
function at Queen’s Club.
14 - 17 February - Bristol &
Bath Club anniversary
tournament: the Brunel Cup
The Falkland 1539ers failed to reach the knock out
stages in Bristol. What's new!
The four players were Simon Sanders, Richard Marmoy, Ross Cullen and
Duncan Macintosh.
It was an excellent tournament, very carefully organised, and very
friendly - with a splendid dinner on board the SS Great Britain on the
Saturday night.

25 August - Visit to Hatfield House

We enjoyed our short
visit to Hatfield and are grateful
to our kind hosts, in particular Nick. We each got a few hours of
tennis, which included 2 hours on Friday evening when we played doubles
among ourselves. The overall result was a bit disappointing: 1 - 4 in
singles matches (each best of 3). Our star player was Jim who had an
excellent match winning 2-0. Detailed scores were:
Silas vs Robbie 6-0,
6-2
Stuart vs Jim 5-6,
5-6
Robin vs Gill 6-1,
6-3
Nick P vs Bob 6-3,
6-2
Nick B vs Peter 6-1,
6-3
No doubles matches were played.

3 March - Visit to
Newmarket
A team of 5 players (Jim
Christie, Peter Cahusac,
Bob Hammond, Robbie de Koning and Ian La Terriere) were challenged in
an away match against Newmarket (John Burnett, Eric Nutter, Barry Peek,
Trish Rolph, John Rolf
and Willie Stogdon). Handicaps were adjusted by 4 - 6 points to
allow for home court advantage. Doubles and singles were played, the
final result was a close 5 - 4 win by Newmarket (check RTO for full
results, match numbers: 186752, 186751, 186748, 186747, 186746, 186744, 186741, 186740, 186739).
This meant that the
cherished Whip was returned to Newmarket. We are grateful to our kind
hosts for entertaining and spoiling us... and they kindly provided the
pictures

27 - 28 August
- Visit by Hatfield House.
Five players from Hatfield House visited on the Sunday and
Monday. A downpour started just as play was about to begin, but
fortunately didn't last long, and play was uninterrupted for the rest
of the visit. Subtracting 10 handicap points of all home players
surprised our visitors, but resulted in a closely fought match of
singles and doubles play - ultimately Falkland winning 6 - 4. A
pleasant evening was had in Luigino's (The Covenanters). Visitors

12 August - Handicap Singles and Doubles finals.
First of all, for those of you
who are not aware, congratulations are in order for Peter Cahusac and
Doug Shankland, winners of the Scratch Singles and the Handicap Singles
Tournaments respectively. Not only had Peter won the Scratch
Singles tournament during the summer, but he was also Doug's opponent
in the final of the Handicap tournament which was played to a capacity
crowd last Saturday. Doug emerged as the straight sets winner and
now goes to Hampton Court to represent the Club in the Chetwood Trophy
for similar winners from other clubs. And if that were not
enough, Peter and Doug found themselves teamed up as a pair in the
doubles competition on Saturday, and guess what ..... they won that as
well. Simon.
22 - 23
July - Visit by the Newmarket and Suffolk Real Tennis Club.
A most enjoyable day of competitive games, doubles and singles,
was played on the Saturday. Despite a fairly generous handicap in
favour of the visitors, home court advantage was still evidenced by the
host club easily winning the match - and retaining the Whip trophy.
Play was followed by dinner at the Greenhouse in the village. On
Sunday, more relaxed doubles finished off the visit. Many thanks to
Trisha for the photos:
